Why Believe The Bible Instead of… say, The Koran?

Why Believe The Bible?

Please note:I apologize for the video not matching the audio. There is no video for this teaching and it is one of the best so I put it with another video. Just close your eyes and listen.

There are many claims to truth. Many books even claim to be inspired by God. Yet the Bible stands above the rest in several ways

First, the Bible has been the most criticized, analyzed, and attacked book in history. Yet it has proven to be the more resilient book in history, standing up under all of the scrutiny. Archeological evidence has confirmed the truth of the Bible again and again, and millions of intelligent people continue to believe in it.

Second, the Bible has supernatural features like no other book. There are hundreds of prophecies contained in the Bible that have come true down to the last detail.

Third, no other book has a message like that in the Bible. The Bible is so bizarrely beautiful, no human imagination could have made it up. The Bible often shows human history from God’s point of view, detailing how God has pursued us throughout time.

Fourth, no other book has the transforming power in people’s lives that the Bible has. The Holy Spirit is present in the Word, and therefore the Bible has the power to change people.

Pastor Greg Boyd is my hero! Actually Jesus is my hero, but Greg is a pretty good guy too. I’ve been following Boyd since I read about him in “The Case for Christ” book by Lee Strobel. I feel like I know him personally as I have downloaded and listened to all his old sermons all the way back to the 90s. Most of the songs I’ve written were inspired by one or more of his messages. Boyd is definitely,at times, inspired by the Holy Spirit. Other times he is definitely “Way out there”. Whatever he is, it is always for real.

I personally believe Greg Boyd is a modern day “John The Baptist”, preparing the way for Jesus’ return.

Please listen to this whole teaching on “Why Believe the Bible”. This and many more of Greg’s

Believe In Jesus… What Have You Got to Lose?

Believe In Jesus

Why Believe In Jesus?

Do you or people you know ever wonder why Christians believe the Bible? What makes it more trust-worthy than any other religious book? No book that has been more attacked, analyzed and criticized than the Bible. Does it stand the test? Greg begins a three-part series on beliefs to build your life on. Why believe in Jesus?

During this beautiful Easter season, the most important question arises: Did Jesus really rise from the dead? The Christian faith and all its transformative power depends upon the truth of Jesus’ resurrection. To be sure, there are very good responses to the very hard questions regarding this.

Here are the top 5 arguments about believing in Jesus’ resurrection along with some responses. We will go in descending order.

5) The story of Jesus’ resurrection could just be a “legend.”
Because there have been some other parallel stories in history where a person supposedly was raised from the dead, some people believe that Jesus being raised from the dead is a legend. This argument doesn’t hold well because of the nature of legendary material. Legends usually take decades to develop and they usually need the right cultural environment to develop. Based on the 1st century Jewish context’s use of oral tradition to combat legend, as well as the very short amount of time that the Jesus account had to develop into the Gospel, it’s not that plausible that the Jesus story is a legend.

4) The story of Jesus’ resurrection could be a lie.
There have been different elaborate lies that people have told about fantastic things happening in history. However, Jesus’ resurrection does not fit into this category. When one thinks of all of the persecution the early Christians suffered as well as the hostile eyewitnesses who would have been looking for lies, it seems like there was tons of pressure to tell the truth if they weren’t doing so originally. We’d have to answer the question about why there aren’t any “defectors” from the lie…if it were a lie.

3) The Gospels seem to be contradictory.
When looking at any ancient written materials, it can be quite difficult to understand what one is reading. If one is not careful, one can take a misunderstanding or misapplication and believe that it’s an outright contradiction. This is definitely the case for the Gospels. There are multiple accounts of the same situation and we should expect there to be some level of difference in some of the details. The major thing is that the Gospels are wonderfully consistent in all of the main aspects of the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

2) There’s no corroborating evidence for Jesus’ resurrection.
If the record is to be set straight, one must understand something about history. Many times, the historical records of certain major events like the Persian wars or the movement of Alexander the Great were given to us by only one source. Even though we have so few sources that were written a long time after the event, no one really doubts the truth of the claims made in these books. With the Jesus story, we have four Gospels, the New Testament writings, and references by non-Christian historical sources like Josephus and Tacitus. Also, many of the sources are very close to the event itself. Taking all this into account, there actually seems to be more corroboration for the life of Jesus then there does for some other significant historical events.

1) Modern people can no longer believe in “miracles” like the resurrection.
Even our scientific discoveries today are showing us that life is not as “cut-and-dry” as many would like to think. There’s a lot more to the universe than we originally thought. It has taught us to be more humble about what we think is or isn’t possible. Taking this learning to the miraculous, it is not helpful to deny the possibility of miracles just because it hasn’t occurred in one’s experience. Things that are statistically improbable “miraculously” happen many times. Jesus’ resurrection fits into that category.

Please Note: This teaching was only available in audio (it’s from Greg Boyd’s 1993 sermons) so I had to put the audio with another video in order to upload to YouTube. (YouTube only accepts video) That is why the audio does not match the video.

Will Pets Talk In Heaven? Why not… they talked in the Garden.

Will Pets Talk In Heaven?

Okay, just call me crazy.

I believe they will. Wouldn’t that be great… to carry on a conversation with Duke after you get back together in Heaven?

Well, why wasn’t Eve shocked when the serpent talked to her in the Garden of Eden.

Excerpt from Genesis:
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden ‘?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;…

I believe it was because all the animals could speak in the Garden.

Before the fall, the humans and animals existed peacefully side by side. All of them ate plants. The animals didn’t have to fear being eaten by people and the people didn’t have to fear being eaten by the animals.

God designed creation so that we would live in community with God and express God’s love towards each other and creation. God’s love is not just an action that God expresses but is rather who God is. God is the Father, Son, and Spirit and all three have an eternal nature of other-oriented, Calvary love. In the book of 1st John, the author writes that Love is defined on the Cross and that God is love. Love is all about the Cross.

We are triune beings. Many people that we only have a body and a soul. However, the Bible tells us that we have a body, soul, and Spirit. The Spirit is our innermost being. Our soul is our mind and personality. Our body is our physical nature. All three combine to make us who we are.

The love of the Trinity is replicated in our relationships with ourselves. We were always supposed to be defined by our image in God. And on the other spectrum, we have our ideas about who we are. We gain the truth of who we are from the Trinity, from the revelations that God has given to us. This is why, in Matthew 22, we are commanded to love God and others as we love ourselves. We have already been programmed to love ourselves as God loves.

When creation began, we were created to exhibit the perfect, other-oriented love of the Trinity to ourselves, others and creation. This is a God-defined society, where God overflows into us as we overflow into each other and creation. We were created to put on display God’s glory, which is God’s radiant love. Everything in creation would have been defined by God’s love and reflect God’s love.

But we were deceived. Because of Sin and Satan, the flow of God’s love to us was interrupted. We began to define our inner image by the things of this world. Instead of hearing and believing God’s image about ourselves, we began to believe the lies about ourselves. We began to believe the lies that others tell us; that we are no good, worthless, broken, ugly, and not loved by God. We then become fragmented within our own triune self. Our soul and body begin to decay and distorted from these lies. Our spirit suffered as a result.

And not only ourselves, but all of creation was deceived. Since God’s love no longer flowed to us, we began to exploit one another and tell each other lies about who we are. When we don’t love our neighbors as we love ourselves, we inevitably use our neighbors for ourselves. And it’s the same with God, animals, and all of creation. Society becomes fragmented into us and them.

God wants us to clothe ourselves not with the love of this world, but the love of Calvary.
Because God clothes himself in the love of Calvary. This begins by us clothing our mental picture of God in Calvary. The love that was given to us on the Cross is the ultimate definition of God’s love and God’s essence. Then, we need to clothe ourselves with Calvary. We were worth everything, and God showed that on Calvary. Finally, we need to live out God’s society here and now through our thoughts and actions towards all other people, animals, and creation. In this way, we live out our true identity in Christ. And all of it is defined by Calvary. Love, it’s all about the Cross.

My idea of Heaven is that it will be a lot like the Garden of Eden. After Christ comes again to bring peace to the world.

As Isaiah predicts: And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox.…

I can’t wait to ask Duke a few things…

The Lion & The Lamb in Heaven.

For The Love of Dog

For The Love Of Dog

Today, I was struck by a wonderful revelation. God does love

me. He really does love me. I really think I get it now… thanks

to my dogs.

Please let me explain. As I was trying to talk frankly with

Jesus (I sometimes imagine He is sitting on the loveseat

directly across from the couch where I usually sit as I pray and

read my Bible), I was suddenly struck by the realization that I

am pitiful. This happens to me a lot. I’m not a righteous man in

so many ways. I don’t love my neighbor as myself most of the

time and in fact I can barely stand to be around most people

for very long to name just one of my shortcomings. “How can

You possibly love me? How could You possibly die for me?

How can this really be true?” Suddenly I was interrupted by

one of our four dogs as she was attempting to steal a chew

bone from her sister. This fighting over bones is a frequently

occurrence among all four of our canine residents. That’s just

one of the many frustrations of dog ownership. But in spite of

all their shortcomings, I love them with all my heart. I love

each of them equally. I discipline them when necessary and

they are constantly doing the wrong thing. I try to train them to

behave properly and I can tell that they would do anything for

me if they could just understand what it is I am trying to get

them to do.

I think God must feel that way about me… about us. He

knows that I am trying to do the right thing most of the time.

Sometimes I lose my focus on Him. Kind of like my dogs when

they smell a bone. It’s hard to stay focused when there are so

many bones in the world. I talk to my dogs all the time, even

though I know they usually don’t understand what I’m trying to

tell them. They just aren’t as smart as us humans although

sometimes they do seem to understand exactly what I mean.

I’m sure God is talking to me all the time too and it must be

frustrating for Him too when I don’t hear or understand what

He’s trying to tell me. I hate to discipline my dogs. I’m sure it

hurts me more than it hurts them but I care about them and I

want them to be good dogs. I’m sure God hates to discipline us

One thing I know about my dogs is that they love me and want

to please me more than anything else. I hope my dogs know

that I love them too no matter what they might do wrong. An d

that helps me to see how God could love me too, no matter

how many things I do wrong. He want me to do the right thing

and He will keep trying to train me to “fetch”. But I know He

will love me even if I don’t bring Him the bone.

I often thought when they were small
And marked crisscrosses on the wall,
That childless couples had the breaks.
I realize now, ’twas my mistake.
I often thought on baking day,
When they were always in the way,
That it would be, oh well, just fine
To have my kitchen cleared, one time.
I longed for solitude, it seemed,
Some leisure time to sit and dream.
But, as they leave the old home nest,
I’m being subjected to the test.
I find that youngster’s noisy ways,
Are better far than lonely days.
Today, my house is orderly,
But yet somehow, it don’t suit me.
I have a lot of leisure time,
But, they keep straying through my mind.
My daydreams are of by-gone years,
I salt my baking with my tears.
I don’t believe I’d mind at all,
To see cross marks on the wall.
To once more hear, ‘twould be so grand,
“Please mommy, may I lick the pan?”

(this is my favorite poem written by my grandmother)

Help For The Grieving

Help For The Grieving

If you have just lost a love one, nothing is going to take away the pain and sorrow immediately. There is no “quick fix”. And you have probably already heard all the standard fare about how they are “in a better place now”, “it was meant to be”, “only God knows the big plan”, “God needed another angel”, etc., etc. You probably don’t want to hear these things even if they are true. Pain, suffering, and anger are very normal part of the grieving process. Don’t even try to deny yourself of these feelings. It’s supposed to hurt. Healing takes time. How you cope with these feelings is what is important.
There are many ways of coping with the death of a loved one. For example some people get drunk. But that’s not a very constructive method of dealing with any problem. One of the best ways of getting past your own pain is to help others. Someone once said, ” I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet”. There is always someone worse off than you. Think about joining a volunteer group or charity organization.
Just search all the different sources on the Internet for ways to find help coping with your loss. There is a support group for just about every situation imaginable.
For me, nothing replaces reading the Bible to find comfort. Not only for my grief for my loved ones who have passed away, but also when I contemplate my own mortality. I am not afraid of my own impending death when I think of being risen again to be with Jesus in heaven.
It helps me to know that if God raised His Son from the dead (and I believe that He did), He can do the same for my loved ones and for me. No one on Earth has suffered any more than Jesus did during His short time here. And for the Father to have to watch His Son suffer and die…well I can’t imagine anything more painful than that. Especially when He could have easily said, “To hell with those ungrateful people on Earth” But He loved us so much that He gave His Son to suffer and die a most horrible death so He could crush the Devil and win back our place for us in Heaven with Him (the Devil tricked us in the Garden of Eden).
I realize that not everyone would like to have a picture of their dearly departed loved one…with or without Jesus…especially if it has been too soon and the death has been too painful. In fact, it is a very normal reaction to be angry with God for a long time after a loved one has passed away.
Even my own sister has a problem with my pictures in that she doesn’t believe that we should depict Jesus in pictures because we don’t really know what He looked like. That’s fine for her, but as for me, I found that looking at pictures of my Dad with Jesus was very comforting and I have several drawers full of thank you letters and cards from customers who agree with me. They have found that being able to visualize their loved one with Jesus is a great aid in healing from their grief. In fact, I am proud to say, in some cases, our “Jesus and Loved One” pictures have been instrumental in the healing process.
The worst picture I have done to date (quality-wise) was from a newspaper clipping of an obituary. It was the only picture that she had of her father. I worked on it for 2 weeks and finally sent her all my best efforts but I wasn’t satisfied with the quality of any of them. She called me a few days later…and thanked me…between sobs …for the beautiful picture of her Dad with Jesus. Beauty truly is in the eyes of the beholder.
My favorite testimony for our pictures came from within our own family. Jenny and I gave all of her brothers and her sister a picture of their Dad with Jesus for a Christmas present. That night, Jenny’s sister was tucking in her 6 year old daughter and was asked to get the picture of “Grandpa with Jesus” . She got the picture for her daughter who looked at it and began to weep. Soon her mother was weeping right along with her. Jenny’s sister told us later that it was the first time that her daughter had cried for her Grandfather since he died 10 month’s before.
Crying is a very important part of “getting better” .
Bible Verses to Comfort
We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
1 Thessalonians 4:14
But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand.
Psalm 10:14
“Surely the LORD is in the place, and I was not aware of it.”
Genesis 28:16
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
Psalm 119:50
It is only a matter of time before it is our “time to mourn.”
Ecclesiastes 3:4
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning.
Ecclesiastes 7:4
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10
For you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.
Psalm 31:7
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
John 6:67-68
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
Revelation 21:4

Here are a few things we can learn from dogs…

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good. So, love the people who treat you right. Think good thoughts for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is part of LIFE…Getting back up is LIVING…

Have a great life.
